Quadrant over Quality

In the last three weeks, I’ve seen three new movies which have already grossed over TWO BILLION DOLLARS worldwide – Obsession, Disclosure Day and Spiderman: Brand New Day.

The truth is – I didn’t love any one of them.

It’s not that they were awful, it’s just that, well, meh.

I feel like I sound old.  And why not?  I guess I’m now on the old-er side.

But this doesn’t mean I don’t love those kinds of movies.

Meaning ones that can make lots of money quickly and appeal to broad swaths of what movie marketers term the four-quadrant audience.

Time to start math-ing!

This phrase has been floating around for decades and I’ve mentioned it before.  But for those unfamiliar, it means:

Quadrant 1: Males under 25

Quadrant 2: Females under 25

Quadrant 3: Males over 25

Quadrant 4: Females over 25

A four headed monster

It can signal family-friendly, but not necessarily.  There are dramas, sci-fi blockbusters, superhero, heartwarming comedies and horror films all included.

Not to be defensive (Note: Though what can you expect when you’re really far away from the minimum requirement in even the third quadrant), but I did tremendously like and almost loved The Odyssey, which has already grossed over ONE BILLION DOLLARS worldwide on its own in the last month.

Really I’m there for Samantha Morton

And then there was Project Hail Mary, an early hit this year I thoroughly enjoyed A LOT that is up to almost SEVEN HUNDRED MILLION DOLLARS internationally at the box-office.

Both of these have my admiration because they tried something a little bit different, developed their characters, have very few plot holes, offer a few earned clever twists and deliver an ending that feels real and earned.

Plus I mean… who can argue with Rocky?!

This is not the case for many films in the four quadrant system these days.  Often they have plot holes the size of 30 foot bagels (Note: Just where were all of the other victims of those One Wish Willow toys in that Obsession town?).  Or too many messy and unanswered pertinent questions (Note: Didn’t those Disclosure Day aliens have a planet that missed them?).  And far too many Easter Egg drops from previous films, and so many Irving The Explainer plot backstory moments, that the diffused present day action can’t sustain enough momentum for us to believe or care much about anything happening in the present day (Note: New Spiderman makes one long for a new origin story of something or someone else that’s super… simple).

And yet, who can argue with TWO BILLION DOLLARS?

what plot holes?

That’s what the fans and the studios of these films could and would likely say.

The other day I flipped on to Turner Classic Movies and they were showing Annie Hall and I, like everyone since, was once again charmed by the wit, talent and originality of the forever missed Diane Keaton.

It’d been years since I’d seen this very simple yet unique love story that Hollywood and the country took to heart and I quickly remembered why it was a film I did love and continue to love.

Diane Keaton Became a Fashion Icon With Annie Hall in 1977
Oh how we miss you Annie

It came out in 1977, a time when I was very much a member of that most desired QUADRANT 1 marketing demographic.

This was a time when major studios made and offered movies in lots of genres.  Films that succeeded at the box-office that didn’t have plot holes the size of a giant baked good.  Or were not overstuffed with homages and unanswered questions.  And actually took the time, as some films that capture the zeitgeist do, to develop their characters and thoroughly earn their place in the hearts of millions.

Aside from multiple Oscar winning Annie Hall (including best picture), here are some other Oscar contenders that came out in 1977.

Ya ready?

Other best picture nominees (there were the proper mere five back then) were: The Goodbye Girl (a Neil Simon character rom-com), Julia (a serious politically-based drama), STAR WARS (a character-based sci-fi blockbuster), and The Turning Point (a show business based relationship movie set in the world of ballet).

Contenders in other categories include other films that moviegoers talk about to this day and that, in their time and by contemporary dollars, would be considered blockbusters.

Try this duo:  Close Encounters of the Third Kind and Saturday Night Fever.

It was also the year of Oh, God!, Pumping Iron, Slapshot, Eraserhead and New York, New York.

Sure, the #2 film at the box-office that year was the paper thin, low rent Smokey and the Bandit and #6 was the semi-coherent, movie-star bloated A Bridge Too Far.  But there were lots of other offerings, SO many as a matter of fact, to even things out.

This is not a critique of the taste of the contemporary mass audience.  People love movies and want to get out of the house to see something new.  But they can only pick and choose from what the studios sell and the movie theatres offer them.

It just seems that if 1977 could give us Annie Hall, Julia and Saturday Night Fever – as well as Star Wars, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and for god sakes, Smokey and the Bandit – that 50 years later it’s not too much to demand that studios, distributors and their billionaire patrons take the time to do a little bit better.

This is probably the best the studios can do

And that we all demand a hell of a lot more.

The Odyssey of The Odyssey

No, I’ve never read Homer’s epic poem/book The Odyssey, so let’s get that out of the way.

But this weekend I did see Christopher Nolan’s film interpretation, The Odyssey.  As did more than a quarter billion dollars-worth of ticket buyers.

How was it?

Brilliantly made, very well-acted and an incredible sweep of the visual wonders of the world.

At almost three hours it is never uninteresting and often captures ancient times as metaphor for contemporary times in a way that is quite accessible.  And …apt.

The Odyssey' Review: Matt Damon in Christopher Nolan's Homer Epic
I too grew a beard while watching it

Sadly, we as a species have not moved on much from 6th century B.C. in terms of pillaging villages, people and whole countries to accrue power and riches for our own benefit, faux safety or simply because we can.

And in terms of the human story, well, that’s also timeless.  And best summed up by my husband of many years early on in our relationship back in the late 1980s when he was studying for his PhD in film studies:

It’s always about the father.  Or mother.

And this Mother is serving in this outfit

In other words, just when you think you’re living through the darkest times of the apocalypse you realize the apocalypse has been going on since the beginning of man and has no intention of letting up any time soon.

If ever.

And that the more you try to run away from your family the more your responsibility to it will haunt you.  Or even help you.  If you let it.

Which does not mean this film and this story is not hopeful or moral or, dare I say the word, entertaining.

It is.

It is also brutal, depressing, thoughtful, violently graphic and, well, dare I say it, beautiful.

We can’t argue with sleeveless costume design

Apocalyptic behavior Nolan-ized for our contemporary pallets and collective benefits.

Consider its lessons on your own terms or simply resume your video game, news channel or screen of choices.

No god can tell you what to do and at the end of your day it’s your choice anyway.  Just as it was in a civilization where there actually were gods that possessed powers our contemporary faux gods can only dream of.

And do dream of.   To our mass detriment.

Perhaps they should see this film, also, and consider their own father, or mother, story.

And consider there was a time when a leader went off to war in a skirt instead of skirted the responsibility to do so.

Good one, Chairy

I’m only half-kidding.

Here’s the thing with gods of any kind.

I’m not much for them and their mythical “powers”.  Or the belief that they can heal what ails you.

For me, it’s difficult to take the myth of it all seriously.  To believe there is some divine arbitrary resurrected personage or energy or all-knowing being that controls things in a certain way in a civilization made of endless, ordinary humans.

Every Zendaya red carpet look from 'The Odyssey' press tour
Ok but can I still pray to Zendaya’s Odyssey press tour looks?

So when the film leans too hard into the supernatural woo-woo it began to lose me in a miasma of junior and senior high school lessons I forever zoned out of and had no interest in.

To this day, I have to consistently look this stuff up every time a student brings a group of these historical deities, who create their own rules and carry all this legacy power to use at their supposedly wide and very subjective discretion, into their stories.

Not to mention, it all seems to divert the responsibility we all have to be our version of divine goodness and the heroes of our own collective stories.

In Defense of Tom Holland's Spider-Man – The Comenian
I’m a hero in every story, though

But if a god is what floats your boat, and the actions you take because of it doesn’t involve murdering me or my family, throwing us out of our home or keeping us down in any way, have at it.

Though sadly in Nolan’s world, a perfect metaphor for ours on this subject, this is not the case.

Too many gods spoil the broth.  So to speak.

Because when you get into god territory it’s not too easy to tell the imposters from the real thing and the real world.

Gods in real life and the movies… let’s be honest

Better to look inside and learn the lessons from the best father or mother figure you can find.

And not necessarily, the biological kind.

All that said, and if it matters to you, The Odyssey is bound for lots of Oscar gold, especially in its technical categories.  Also look for nominations for Christopher Nolan, Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway and perhaps even Sammantha Morton in a very memorable, mid-movie sequence.

As for winners, well Mr. Nolan and all of us have already won because we’ve got an epic movie movie to go to this summer.  The kind that it’s well-worth going out of your house to and braving all the vagaries of air, land and water for in these hopefully faux apocalyptic times.
