The Free Press On

Buckle your seat belts, it’s going to be a bumpy road to Election Day and beyond for the U.S.

That’s the United States, for those who don’t remember what the initials stand for. A group of various territories within the country that are “united” because we believe in democracy as stated in the Constitution, amendments to the Constitution, The Bill of Rights and general laws.

can you feel my patriotism?

The very first amendment to the Constitution is all about freedom of the press. What that means, aside from Congress not making laws abridging speech, is that the government can’t stop the media from printing or broadcasting opinions it doesn’t like.

So what do you do when the sitting POTUS bans three major press outlets from the White House whose coverage he doesn’t like because they criticize him?

Totally normal stuff here

Well, if you’re the press corps you unite around those banned unfairly/illegally and don’t cover him.

And if you’re the publications and networks he banned you sue to get your press passes back so you can cover him along with all the other media he finds acceptable.

This all happened this week when CNN, MSNOW and Politico had their White House press passes revoked.

Press room: Empty

Good news for free speech supporters, which should be everyone in the country.  They won in court.

Bad news is after letting them back in for a day, the White House banned CNN from the WH media pool again and blocked its access to Air Force One.

This is going to go on for awhile.

I’m exhausted already

Sort of like a grade school fight where one big kid keeps trying to torture those less big and powerful behind the back of the teacher.

Well, you can beat them up, take away their lunch money, call them names and criticize everything they do (Note: FAKE NEWS!) but that doesn’t mean the kids are not going to show up in school every day.

It also doesn’t mean anything you do or say is justified under the law.

If only someone would read him his rights!

The teacher, nee the courts, are going to continue to take you to task and remind you of the rules and the kids are going to keep showing up.

You can appeal but years of precedent and written rules of the school aren’t likely to allow you to change anything.

Meaning you won’t get your way.

For now…

You can yell and scream and keep insisting you can do whatever you want forever and a day but it won’t alter those facts of life at all and you’ll look like a childish idiot.

That is unless you decide you to burn the entire school down and get a few people in high places to torch the entire school system, and education, along with it.

This is where democracy is in the U.S., metaphorically speaking, in case you wondered.

Today’s oval office

Hanging on with a lot of support from the general public. Hoping that a metaphorical handful of those in power that clearly represent a minority of the country, don’t throw any more fire at the 250 year-old American experiment in an attempt to extinguish it and it’s traditions, under the direction of its sitting, and temporary as mandated by law, leader.

This week the current White House issued a commercial supporting the actions of our current and temporary POTUS (Note: With his face and images are all over it) that taxpayer dollars paid for.

This is not only precedent-breaking, but likely illegal.

In said commercial, which you can access here since I can’t bear to print it, we are told definitively by this POTUS that America “will never be a communist country” and then harangued by words shooting out onto the screen listing his supposed achievements.

And this is all done unironically to the tune of Love Me, an r&b song by JMSN.

Meanwhile, in real life, our sitting POTUS literally had workers on their knees rolling out a large red carpet, which he then stood on, to greet the most powerful communist leader in the world, China’s Xi Jinping.

This is so embarassing

This guy is an authoritarian governing 1.4 billion people with an iron fist and absolutely ZERO freedom of the press.

And in the course of a few days there were dinners, presents exchanged, one-sided purple prose compliments to the man from our sitting POTUS.

As well as a bunch of insults about our former POTUS by the sitting POTUS to the worldwide leader of the biggest and most powerful Communist Party country on the planet, which we will never be.

And who says American is not a land of opportunity?

Just ugh

There is very little editorial in anything I just wrote.  You can look it all up on the google, or ask your favorite A.I. and check the facts with them.. it…I mean….

You will need them, and a lot of other facts, come Election Day.

It is especially important in order to not be scammed by shameless opportunists who want to convince you that ongoing attempts to tear down a pillar of democracy like freedom of the press is a move against communism, rather than three giant steps towards it.

a man behind a green curtain says pay no attention to that man behind the curtain !
Pull back that curtain!

As for Election Day:

If there is an overwhelming response to preserve democracy, a democracy will not be torn down.

Six months ago an election in Hungary proved that by ending a 16-year rule of a political party dancing around and well into authoritarian rule.

But only because a record 80% of the electorate turned out to vote.

We can do the same if we choose to preserve our democracy and truly stop a communist-style rule in our real lives.

VOTE!

THEY are unable to throw out and/or disenfranchise 80% of our vote.

At least for now.

Traditional American Values

I struggled with how to write about the murder of far right wing, Christian nationalist influencer Charlie Kirk this week.

There are many reasons for this but primarily I’ll confess three:

  1. I HATE violence
  2. I HATE hypocrisy
  3. I HATE when religion of any kind gets mixed up in politics of any kind
Checks all boxes

The latter point is particularly meaningful to me because I believe, as our founders did, that religion has no place in politics.  (Note: Yeah, they did.  Check out this pre-MAGA analysis from 15 years ago)

Believe what you like or DO NOT believe AT ALL.

But the bottom line for me is that ATHEISTS have as much RIGHT to the moral high ground as the most devout preacher, rabbi or imam in this country.

Ethics and Morals 101

As a Jewish person, I loathed when the late Sen. Joe Lieberman injected his faith into political arguments.

As a lifelong Democrat I become extremely uncomfortable when Sen. Raphael Warnock (D-GA) uses his senatorial platform to quote scripture in order to burnish any political argument.

And as a secularist, my blood begins to boil when the likes of Vice President J.D. Vance and Defense Department Secretary Pete Hegseth, to name a few of many, advocate all over the internet for a Christian nationalist state requiring prayer and religion becoming a part of American education and American politics, AND that Americans be guided by THEIR Christian principles as if they are some universal doctrine.

Uncomfortable

It’s not that I am against Christianity.  I mean, I married a guy who spent most of his early years in Catholic school.  It’s that I believe the basic tenet of America is that we are a melting pot of inclusivity and beliefs AND that it is THE primary asset we have to offer the world.

We are AMERICANS.  That means we are comprised of Jews, Christians, Muslims, Buddhists, Protestants, Wiccans, Agnostics and ATHEISTS, just to name a few.

Feeling a little more like this lately

When we favor one we are ostensibly telling everyone else they can’t believe what they believe. In essence, we’ve going against the traditional values given to us by our very imperfect, yet very prescient, founders – the Separation of Church and State.

If you don’t believe me look at the first amendment to the Constitution:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.

Keeping them separated

It’s not like you can’t talk about it as a social issue.  But when the lines are blurred and it becomes a political cudgel used by political figures to adopt laws or defeat the opposition, that’s a dangerous attempt to turn the United States into something it was never intended to be – a theocracy.

Which brings us to violence and hypocrisy.

Mr. Kirk, 31, was shot dead by one bullet fired by a disturbed young man from a rooftop while speaking at an outdoor forum at Utah Valley University.

In front of a huge crowd

It’s a large school of approximately 47,000 that leans conservative and Kirk was on the first stop in a series of 10 college campuses on what he had branded as The American Comeback Tour.

He brandished his internet fame with these events and at the time of his death had close to 4 million followers on his personal YouTube channel, though his outreach was in the tens of millions.

On the surface, Kirk’s thing was to have a dialogue with “anyone” on the events of the day, and often loved being challenged by young people on the left about his beliefs.

A sample prompt for these dialogues

But in reality, what he offered was catnip entertainment where he used his oratorial powers and extreme views to rapid fire “own the libs” through speedy, seemingly impromptu discourse where he’d quote select Bible verses and offer a mashup of statistics and unvetted conservative think-tank type studies/talking points to publicly pillory his opponents.

He was charismatic to many but certainly not to me.

I will never understand the appeal of people who spew racist nonsense like, If I see a Black pilot I’m going to be like, boy, I hope he’s qualified; or who categorize accomplished Black women like Michelle Obama and Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson as “affirmative action picks” who “had to go steal a white person’s slot to be taken somewhat seriously.”

From January 2024

I also don’t appreciate people who proclaim there is no separation of church and state, cherry picking facts (Note: Once again) to prove A-historical points.

Nor do I appreciate anyone who blithely uses their Bible quotes as a way to order any woman to “submit to your husband…you’re not in charge,” as he recently did to one of the most successful female entertainers in the history of the world, Taylor Swift.

Lastly, and needless to say, as a Jew and a gay person, I find it lazily provocative, not to mention offensive, when a person proclaims: We need a Nuremberg-style trial for every gender affirming clinic doctor” as Mr. Kirk proclaimed in April last year.

Speechless

There are many dozens of bilious bon mots of this fashion, some of which are quoted in this article from The Guardian.

And if you want a particularly strong editorial of Mr. Kirk’s origin story, how he founded his business and the way he conducted himself in his attempts to convert America to Christian nationalism, click here.

On the other hand, if you want to read or listen to a defense of Christian nationalism and Mr. Kirk’s roadshow simply google the President, the Vice President or Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. They represent the succession of power in U.S. leadership at the moment and the current “official” word on the subject.

But let me close with this:

It’s abhorrent the guy was shot, in public, for saying anything someone didn’t like.  And It’s especially hurtful and awful for his family and friends, who have to endure that footage being broadcast worldwide and shared endlessly online everywhere and probably for all eternity.

Correct

But let’s not turn this into a biblical argument between good and evil.

That’s just plain un-American.

In the very traditional sense.
