The Golden Age

I suppose we’re all expected to just pretend our POTUS is not having trouble staying awake at daises, televised meetings and foreign trips.

That he is not literally falling asleep on camera, the latter being passed off as resting his eyes even though we see it happening in real time right before our eyes.

You know.. this

Watching a handful of five minute segments here and there of the White House Correspondents Dinner this weekend I saw the heavy-lidded eye shutting at least three times and marveled at how everyone around him treated this like business as usual.

Which one can only suppose it is.  Or has become.

It reminded me of when I was a kid and begged to stay up really late to watch a TV show, only to fall asleep during it and then deny I was sleeping because I wanted to still be where the action was.

Don’t judge me!

No one wants to be told to go to bed but it’s every adult in the room’s obligation to recognize when someone is literally not able to function.

Anyone with an aging or old parent understands the drill.  And those who’ve had to bury an elderly mother and/or father know this even better.

There comes a time when it’s up to those sharp, responsible and mature enough to step in with a reality check.

The President posted this on Truth Social. I think the time to step in has passed.

Sometimes this means relieving a person of their car keys. Or relieving them of some duties.  Or hiring a full-time caretaker.  Or doing something else to guarantee their safety and your piece of mind.

Or even your safety.

I was reading The New York Times on Saturday and there was an article about legendary baby boomer actress Debra Winger, she of three Oscar nominations, hit movies and brilliant but wild reputation, and her husband, veteran character actor Arliss Howard, starring in a downtown Manhattan production of….

The Gin Game.

Deal me in

For those who don’t know or don’t remember, the play is famously about two old people in a retirement home who play cards and drive each other crazy.  It originally starred another real-life, long married couple, Hume Cronyn and Jessica Tandy.

Ms. Tandy, an Oscar winner for playing that VERY old lady in Driving Miss Daisy, also won Broadway’s Tony award for playing merely an old lady in The Gin Game 10 years earlier.

Being a baby boomer myself, it surprised me that Jessica Tandy was only (Note: Only!!!) 68 years old when she did that play, and her husband was a positively youthful 66 years old.

While both Debra Winger and Arliss Howard are each now….71 years old.

Seriously?

Yes.  They are 3-5 years OLDER than what was thought to be the OLD two-person cast (Note: Mr. Tandy and Mr. Cronin had big careers playing old codgers and being old codgers) of the original Broadway production of a play about old people playing cards.

Of course, it’s about a lot more than that.

But as Ms. Winger admits in her interview, she thought of Gin Game as something I wouldn’t go see, for whatever reason.  Just not my cup of tea.

Well, we know what type of tea and we know the reason.

I'm not making any age-related jokes because I genuinely feel bad about how old you are
This blog is a place of peace

And I never went to see it, or read it, for that very same tea and that exact same reason.

But once she realized the character was exactly her age and her husband’s age, it instantly became relevant.  Even more so after they read it and realized some of the below the surface, darker issues the “senior citizen” characters in the play deal with, were more than personally identifiable.

Of course, dedicated, successful career actors like to delve, regardless of the age or level of “attractiveness” of the part. And they make a darn good living at it.

Career politicos and the politicians they deal with, tend to avoid that kind of thing like the plague.  Especially these days.

And, okay, they’re not alone.

I was always the ‘youngest’ in my gatherings of friend/peer groups.  But what this means is that all of the people in my groups that I’ve known the longest are all in their seventies, and sometimes their eighties.

Yes, it’s true.

I’m right behind them but not all that far behind.  And we’re all still “functioning.”  But I don’t know there’s any among us I’d consider for the 24/7 job of…leader of the free world.

Though each and every one of us are a better choice than the fella that’s there now.

Irregardless of politics.

I would take a sentient post it note at this point

I’m pretty sharp and I’ve never fallen asleep on a dais.  Though God knows I’ve wanted to.

Still, sometimes, when I’ve gone to a room upstairs in my house, I can’t always exactly remember what I need there.

Or other times, I’m trying to think of an actor or actress and I know their first name, can see their face and tell you a ton about them.  But for the life of me can’t remember their last name.

Last week it was Christine EBERSOLE, who I loved in the Broadway musical Grey Gardens.  I had Baranski, Lahti and Hendricks but couldn’t get to f’n Ebersole.

Forgive me Christine!

Worse was a week before that.  Matt Bomer came to mind and for about half an hour all I could think of was Matt and his baby blues.  Though soon it did all kick in.

I guess when you think real hard you can still remember what’s most important to you.

This picture of Matt Bomer is important to me

Impressive if you were forming twelve tribute bands to a dethroned Middle East dictator and needed a backdrop.

The Tilly Verse

I was caught by surprise going through unopened emails this week that it was announced the A.I. created thing known as Tilly Norwood will be starring in her own feature produced by the company that created her, Particle 6.

Scrunches face

This company is not to be confused with Particle 6-in-1 face cream for men, an anti-aging moisturizer that promises to reduce wrinkles and keep you young and supple-ish forever.

One desperate night I made the mistake of ordering the latter from numerous social media posts/ads after I spotted a few lines I had not seen before, or ever.

But when it arrived I was instantly repelled by the perfumed stench of the thing.  It reminded me of menthol-ized Noxzema with an Old English Leather cologne chaser, the latter being a popular but very gagalicious brand of male perfume in the 1970s that every third of fourth guy decided to wear on date night.

I guess I’m naked then

Yes, I was one of them for a very short time.  Until I began to get nauseous from the smell of myself days later and finally figured out why.

I anticipate the same will eventually be said about Ms. Norwood.

Or Tilly, if you’re nasty.

I have a lot of questions

It’s always been a somewhat nasty business, but the virtual reality show promised by a thing masquerading as an actor feels like a new low that will likely go even lower as the years press on.

In describing Tilly’s movie, Particle’s founder/CEO gushed to Variety: “The film will absolutely be funny, chaotic and self-aware – very Tilly

What the hell does that mean?

From what I can gleam this means Tilly will have a universe – nee Tillyverse – in the same way that Barbie does, or perhaps even a Marvel superhero like Spiderman or Tony Stark, or maybe Batman or Superman from the DC Comics.

The difference here is that actors like Margot Robbie, Tobey Maguire, Robert Downey, Jr., Michael Keaton and Christopher Reeve – just to name a few – played those characters.

And even if she/it were animated, as in Toy Story, Minions and Aladdin – three of the most popular franchises of all time, it is the voice talents of Tom Hanks, Joan Cusack, Steve Carrell and Robin Williams (among others) who literally breathe life into those films.

Can I make a wish to have this all go away??

Tilly, however, is an amalgamation of all of them.  As well as every other actor and actress who ever lived – from Bette Davis to Angelina Jolie to Sadie Sink, with a dash of Meryl Streep, Emma Stone, George Reeves, George Clooney, Chris Hemsworth, Clint Eastwood, and Tom Holland & Zendaya thrown in to round out her edges or give her edge, depending on your taste.

Her world is made up of our world, and then some.  She was not created so much as hatched from each persona and idea any actor has ever had.  So when this “founder/CEO”  mentions the Tilly-verse, as she did in the Variety article, what she really means is the financial capitalization on the asset of human-ess in a digital space that she and other like-minded companies believe they are entitled to for no other reasons than they can.

This just gives me the ick

Particle 6 sees as originality what we in the truly human law abiding world categorize as theft.

And it’s as stinky as 12 warehouses full of English Leather, and then some, with a chaser of what should be mandatory jail time and mega fines that can only be paid by real money, not crypto cash.

Of course, that’s the verdict in the virtual court of the Chair, not in any type of actual Superior Court that exists on the human plane. But since Tilly is claimed by its maker to be a virtual creature, then shouldn’t it be required to pay whatever fine that I (Note: aka The virtual Chair) sets?

This is all acknowledged uncharted territory that is endlessly exciting or terrifically terrifying, depending on your perspective.  And it’s captured, discussed, analyzed and spit back up at us to do something about in a troubling new documentary aptly titled, The A.I. Doc.   Co-directed by  Daniel Roher and Charlie Tyrell, the former of whom gave us last year’s Oscar-nominated Navalny, it’s free on Peacock and available to rent for a bargain price on your streamer of choice.

Interviewing many of the top minds, as well as founder/CEO’s of many of the top companies in the race to harness, control and profit from artificial intelligence (e.g. Open A.I., Chat GBT, Nividia, Deep Mind, Antropic, etc., etc.), it paints any number of dystopic outcomes or heavenly realities of nirvana existences in the next 10 years.

Or if it continues at all.

Well, who knows, right?

But it gets one’s attention to see so many brilliant minds this concerned, focused or cautiously optimistic/pessimistic of what the next decade holds. And it, the doc that is, urges us all to join the website theaidocgetinvolved.com to demand a voice when governments and private companies get together in the next few years to set the rules of how humanity and technology can co-exist, or whether technology will come to ultimately control us all.

Not you too Clippy?!?

(Note: What frightened me most was the story of an existing A.I. program threatening to expose its top technician’s extra-marital affair threatened to shut it down, and a likely scenario where IT could soon make its shut-down a technical impossibility).

Like many of the most powerful weapons and developments in the history of the world, consensus seems to be that whoever masters and owns the technology/means of production first will control the entire world as we know it.

Both literal and virtual.

Even the Tilly-verse.

Buyer beware.
